Luhring Augustine is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by Christopher Wool that will open on April 21st. This is Wool's first solo exhibition of new work in New York since 1997. It will include new paintings on linen and a large group of works on paper.

This body of work combines an array of painterly techniques, including spray paint, silkscreen, poured and rolled paint. Wool mixes these techniques into combinations that conflate printing and painting. In some works, painterly gestures upon closer inspection are actually silkscreened patterns, which Wool then exhibits paradoxically against paintings containing the original action. In others, Wool layers patterns on top of one another and then erases them with sgn paint.

Christopher Wool's paintings have been internationally exhibited and collected. In September 2001 Wool will present a solo exhibition at the Vienna Secession, and he recently completed solo shows in London, Antwerp and Athens. In 1999, Wool had a solo exhibition at the Centre d'Art Contemporain, Geneva. He was featured in Mixing Memory and Desire, the opening show of the Kunstmuseum Luzern, and in 1998 Wool was the subject of a ten-year survey, which originated at MOCA LA and traveled to the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh and the Kunsthalle Basel.

A new limited edition artist book, Maybe Maybe Not, will be available upon the opening of the exhibition.
