The Factory of Shadows a solo exhibition by Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller, is on view at the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova, Coimbra, Portugal through July 5, 2025.
Known for their immersive multimedia installations that explore sound, memory, and narrative, Cardiff and Miller were selected for the 2025 edition of the Solo Show, a monographic exhibition presented by Anozero – Biennial de Coimbra. In The Factory of Shadows, Cardiff and Miller have transformed the historic landmark of the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova into a “listening machine,” a realm of auditory and visual storytelling. Curated by the Círculo de Artes Plásticas de Coimbra, The Factory of Shadows presents over a dozen works by Cardiff and Miller that span the past three decades, including The Forty Part Motet (2001), one of the artists’ most celebrated sound installations, and The Infinity Machine (2015), presented only for the second time and first time in Europe.
