Luhring Augustine is pleased to present a solo exhibition of recent work by Elad Lassry at The 2012 Art Show, organized by the Art Dealer’s Association of America. Lassry delves deeply into the complicated and multilayered nature of pictures. Working in photography, film, sculpture, drawings, collage, and installation‐based work, Lassry intentionally blurs distinctions, conflating and confounding preconceptions about images being found or created, moving or still, commercial or conceptual, utilitarian or artistic. Lassry’s investigations question the status of a picture and the experience of looking at one: by presenting various genres of pictures/images together, Lassry asks the viewer to dismantle the histories within each genre and to reinvestigate our engagement with pictures.
Lassry’s installation for The 2012 Art Show will include three photographs, two charcoal works on paper, and two sculptures: a cabinet work and a collage installation. The inclusion of this variety of media raises the issue of units and their framing usage: the cabinet repeats units within one work, while the C‐ prints and drawings dismantle into singular units. The collage installation plays with the idea of units in a different way, repeating the same image three times yet tying them together with netting below. Lassry’s concern with the ontological and the experience of looking at pictures is fractured into a variety of media yet the works hold together cohesively through this multilayered experimentation with the framing unit.
Elad Lassry has had numerous solo exhibitions at significant institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Kunsthalle Zurich; the Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis; the Art Institute of Chicago; and the Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo. He has also been included in a number of significant group exhibitions, including the 2011 Venice Biennale; “The Generational: Younger Than Jesus” at the New Museum, New York; and “New Photography 2010” at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. In 2011 he was one of four finalists for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize, London. Upcoming solo exhibitions in 2012 include the Fondazione Galleria Civica, Trento; Rathole Gallery, Tokyo; and David Kordansky Gallery, Los Angeles. The artist lives and works in Los Angeles.
