Through a fiercely individual approach, and persistent experimentation with technique and materials, Joan Snyder has extended the expressive potential of abstract painting and inspired generations of emerging artists. Snyder first gained public attention in the early 1970s with her gestural and elegant Stroke paintings; grounding her work in the grid, she dissected each stroke, gesture, and mark, retelling the story of abstract painting. By the late 1970s, her work shifted to incorporate personal and confessional narratives. Since the mid-1970s Snyder’s work, informed by her feminist sensibility, began developing a vocabulary of motifs and symbols—from roses, breasts, ponds and fields, to cherry trees, sunflowers, grapes, pumpkins and moons, to totems, screaming faces and scrawled words. She also began integrating a wide range of material into the paintings, including mud, straw, dried flowers, herbs, silk and fabrics. As Norman Kleeblatt wrote in 2021, “Snyder’s art is never entirely abstract, nor any way near representational. She embeds in them inscrutable clues to their meaning and cues to feeling, capable of taking viewers of her works on tours through expressions of joy and beauty, vulnerability and pain, terror and astonishment, healing and hope.”[1]
Born April 16, 1940 in Highland Park, NJ, Snyder received her BA from Douglass College in 1962 and her MFA from Rutgers University in 1966. Her impact on abstract art and materialistic exploration has brought her widespread critical claim and institutional recognition. Snyder has received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship (1974), John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship (1983), MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (2007), and has been elected a lifetime member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2026). Institutional solo presentations of her work include Working in Brooklyn: Joan Snyder: Works on Paper, Brooklyn Museum (1998); Joan Snyder: A Painting Survey, 1969-2005, The Jewish Museum, New York (2006); Dancing with the Dark: Prints by Joan Snyder 1963-2010, Zimmerli Art Museum, New Brunswick, NJ (2011); and Hyundai Card First Look: Joan Snyder, The Museum of Modern Art, New York (2026). A retrospective of Snyder's work is scheduled to open at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 2028.

Early in her career, her work was included in landmark group exhibitions, including the 1973 and 1981 Whitney Biennials and the 1975 Corcoran Biennial. More recent group shows include Epic Abstraction: Pollock to Herrera, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2018-2020); In the Studio: Painterly Gestures, Tate Modern, London, UK (2023-24); and A Living Collection, The Hepworth Wakefield, West Yorkshire, UK (2026-27). Her work is in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; Solomon R.
