From June 24 to August 2, Luhring Augustine will present Exposure, an examination of photo-based work by a diverse selection of artists. Photographic technologies continue to dominate the increasingly complex domains of visual culture. Exposure will reveal relationships among the participating artists by spotlighting their engagement with contemporary photographic activity.
In an effort to establish links of purpose and practice, the medium of photography has been chosen as a means to illuminate the common ground shared by this group of significant contemporary artists. From Yasumasa Morimura’s use of photography in probing the meaning of celebrity and identity to Larry Clark’s classical approach to radical subjects; from Jon Kessler’s deconstruction of visual function with mechanical color separations, to Jack Pierson’s interrogation of seduction with alternatively remote and immediate photographic means, all of these artists use photography to establish a challenging position to their subject. Of particular interest in this gathering of artists will be new, previously unexhibited work by Janine Antoni, Gregory Crewdson, and Rachel Whiteread, as well as a glimpse of the upcoming Paul McCarthy exhibition in September.
