Mark Handforth | New Commission in Sunnyvale, CA - Redwood Square Park, Sunnyvale, CA - Highlights - Luhring Augustine

Mark Handforth’s newly commissioned sculpture, Redwood Blue (2025), is now on view at Redwood Square Park in Sunnyvale, California.

This permanent installation is rooted at the nexus of Redwood Square and Frances Street and is distinctly visible from many vistas. The richly colored standing star rises from the pavement, tree-like, above our heads; the arcing, lyrical form plays against the straight lines of the architecture in the park, while nodding to the ancient organic poetry of Redwoods trees that surround it. Like so many depictions of stars, ubiquitous yet magical icons, Redwood Blue, is in essence an imaginary structure that allows lines of light to be drawn in space. The folded aluminum, their fluid gestures like brushed calligraphy, describe a continuous, inevitable movement through space, a mind’s eye process writ large. Redwood Blue exists as play between the looseness of the intention and the physical weighted reality of objecthood.
