Oscar Tuazon
Luhring Augustine is pleased to announce Words for Water, a new solo exhibition by US sculptor and installation artist Oscar Tuazon, at fjk3 – Contemporary Art Space in Vienna, marking the artist's first solo exhibition in Austria. With an opening reception at 7pm on October 10, 2024, the exhibition will remain on view through February 9, 2025.
Words for Water presents works by the artist that engage with social spaces and the public realm. Utilizing a blend of natural and industrial materials like wood, stone, metal, and concrete, as well as architectural approaches and do-it-yourself strategies, he creates structures that blur the lines between functional architecture and sculpture. Many of his projects draw inspiration from alternative and utopian architectures of the 1960s and 1970s, as well as early eco-efficient and self-sufficient living models. Tuazon explores these architectural approaches to assess their relevance for today, not only in terms of the underlying technological principles, but also for potential spatial uses and models of identity.
The exhibition highlights Tuazon's long-term initiative, Water School, a nomadic architectural structure and educational space that has been running since 2016, which examines the dynamics and power games that govern access to land, water, and infrastructure. Accompanying the exhibition will be a series of discussions addressing these concerns. One of the talks will focus on the significance of water for Vienna, the only city in the world that enshrined the protection of its renowned high-spring drinking water in a constitutional provision in 2001.
