Ragnar Kjartansson, Sumarnótt, 2019, Seven-channel video installation, Duration: 77 minutes, © Ragnar Kjartansson; Courtesy of the artist, Luhring Augustine, New York, and i8 Gallery, Reykjavik

Ragnar Kjartansson’s Sumarnótt is on view at the National Gallery of Iceland. First shown at the Metropolitan Museum in New York in 2019, this is the first time the work has been exhibited in Iceland.

Filmed one Icelandic summer night, when darkness never falls, Death Is Elsewhere is one of the artist’s large-scale video installations where repetition, time, and space play important roles. This immersive, seven-channel video features four musicians—male and female twins—who, throughout the 77-minute video, seem to encircle the viewer as they move through a pastoral landscape while performing the title song Death Is Elsewhere.
