Luhring Augustine is pleased to announce an exhibition dedicated to the work of Tunga will open Saturday, September 28, 2024 at the Château La Coste, an art institution located in the Aix-en-Provence region of France, where it will remain on view through January 5, 2025.
The show will be presented in a gallery designed by Oscar Niemeyer, which is located next to Psicopompos, the permanent work that Tunga created for Château La Coste between 2008 and 2011. Featuring around twenty works across a range of media that date from 2010 to 2016, the exhibition will explore the evolution of Tunga’s work towards new materials: the emergence of bells, bottles, chalices, jewelry, teeth, wings, portals, lights, tripods, and thimbles. Among the pieces on display will be a 2015 installation, one of the last such works conceived by the artist, which demonstrates this diversity of materials and uses a plant commonly known as "Saint George's sword" (espadas de São Jorge). The plants, which refer to religious cults and popular beliefs while simultaneously evoking the patron saint of the city Rio de Janeiro where Tunga lived, are accompanied by traditional sword-forging tools, such as an anvil, a hammer, and a water jug used to cool the metal. This exhibition at Château La Coste will pay tribute to Tunga’s practice and continue the legacy of his work Psicopompos installed on the estate.
