Charles Atlas introduces film for Merce Cunningham Centennial

Charles Atlas, video still from Ocean, 2010.

As a part of the Merce Cunningham Centennial at the Anthology Film Archives, Charles Atlas will introduce Ocean (2010) a film made in collaboration with dancer-choreographer Merce Cunningham. Tickets are available at Anthology's box office on the day of the show only. The box office opens 30 minutes before the first show of the day. There are no advance ticket sales. Reservations are available to Anthology members only.

Charles Atlas’s Ocean captures the breathtaking 2008 performances of Cunningham’s seminal dance work of the same title. Completed in 1994, Cunningham’s 90-minute opus was jointly conceived with John Cage, whose original ideas stemmed from a commission about novelist James Joyce. Similarly, Atlas’s film serves as an ode to his four-decades-long collaboration with Cunningham, who died in 2009, before the film was finished. Atlas’s Ocean celebrates these histories and their relation to the intertwining of video, music, and dance.
